“What would you say if I told you I thought the sithen was trying to help us?” I asked. “There’s a trap just ahead, but if you hadn’t said anything, I wouldn’t have felt it until too late.” I patted the wall in thanks and jumped as it vibrated under my hand, not a tremor like an earthquake, but a pulse of recognition from the sithen to me—the Fairy mound showing me again that I was accepted and welcome.

“I’d ask what kind of trap,” Marcos broke in from behind. “And how to spring it.” I nodded at him and glanced around my feet for a stone large enough to trip the magical net woven like a spider’s web from floor to ceiling. Finding one I figured big enough to set off the webbing no matter where I hit it, I lobbed the rock down the hall, trying to remember where I’d seen the shimmer. It hit with a flash and flames shot out across where the strands had been, fizzling out against the stone wall. One flare climbed the wall to the hanging torch and pushed the flames almost to the ceiling in a whoosh of fire that made both my wolves and Aina jump back, as Steven cursed aloud.
